Mount Vernon resident Michael Lawrence, 26, has pleaded guilty in Hartford federal court to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon dating back to an incident last summer.
U.S. Attorney John Durham said that on Aug. 22 last year, local, state and federal law enforcement officials conducted a criminal interdiction and enforcement operation at Union Station in New Haven. During a random inspection, a DEA agent found a loaded .38 caliber handgun and marijuana in Lawrence’s backpack.
The gun had been reported stolen in Alabama in July last year. Durham noted that in 2015, Lawrence was convicted in New York of criminal possession of a controlled substance. He added it is a violation of federal law for a previously conceited felon to be in possession of a firearm and ammunition from a different state.
Lawrence is currently incarcerated in New York for violating his probation. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 15, when he will face a maximum term of 10 years in prison.
